In a world that softens every edge and dulls every truth, one poet dares to tear the veil away. Fearsome Awakenings is a collection that does not whisper—it confronts. With the fearless precision and luminous intensity that define Vlad Neagoe’s work, these poems plunge into the moments when consciousness sharpens, when old illusions shatter, and when the self is forced to rise, trembling yet unbroken, into a fiercer light.Neagoe’s poetry—celebrated for its fantastic invention, razor-sharp irony, and dense verbal music—subjects the pulse of lived experience to maximum condensation. Here, sensitivity and clear-sightedness forge architectures of language that are at once harmonious and unsettling, sobering and ecstatic. The result is verse that moves like a living current: serious, inventive, and alive with the boiling emotion of first enthusiasms and hard-won revelations. These are not gentle meditations. They are awakenings that demand courage—fearsome in their honesty, transformative in their beauty. Whether tracing the fragile boundary between hope and misfortune, memory and the present, or silence and sudden clarity, Neagoe invites you into a space where the mind dances freely and the heart is stripped bare.If you seek poetry that answers postmodern fragmentation with invention, depth, and unflinching vision, Fearsome Awakenings is waiting.Open the book. Fearsome Awakenings is a book that doesn’t whisper its truths — it detonates them.

 FEARSOME AWAKENINGS — Vlad Neagoe

A book for readers who refuse to sleep through their own lives.

Vlad Neagoe’s Fearsome Awakenings is a plunge into the raw territories of consciousness — where memory burns, identity fractures, and the self rises again, sharper and unafraid. These poems don’t soothe; they confront. They peel back the layers of habit, illusion, and inherited silence, revealing the electric pulse of a mind fighting to stay awake in a world that prefers dreams.

With a voice both ascetic and volcanic, Neagoe crafts visions that linger like afterimages: stark, luminous, unsettling. Fearsome Awakenings is not a book you read — it’s a book that happens to you.

If you’re ready for poetry that challenges, disturbs, and ultimately transforms, open it. If not, keep the lights on.

THE PROGRESS

The progress is fatal, but fatal like a disease,
like a scourge with NGOs, like a sinister
disaster, electricity, artificial intelligence,
the wonderful projectiles, airplanes, submarines,
torpedoes and gases and viruses and the mass media –
from these then spurts consciousness,
the nameless evil, the city built out of embraced
jackals. Everyone sees her coming and going,
monumental, triumphant, carrying her
hot days upon the yellowed concave skull
with immaculate lice on the forehead,
and they will stop on a stone, lost in the multitude –
what a leap imprinted in one's own shit.

A Lyrical Essay on Fearsome Awakenings

A Lyrical Essay on Fearsome Awakenings

(with brief citations from the attached manuscript)

Vlad Neagoe’s Fearsome Awakenings is not a book — it is a trembling, incandescent organism. It breathes, it bleeds, it mutters prophecies in the dark. To read it is to step into a chamber where suffering becomes a form of clairvoyance, where love is a fever, and where the world — this world we think we know — reveals its hidden skeleton of fire, dust, and divine paleness.

From the first page, Neagoe speaks from a wound so ancient it feels primordial. Childhood is not memory but myth, a crucible in which the poet is forged through cruelty:

“they hit me, they hit me, they hit me until they turned me to dust until they made me the flour of the air”

This “flour of the air” becomes the substance of the book: a pulverized self that rises again and again, reshaped by trauma, by desire, by metaphysical dread. Neagoe writes as one who has walked through the furnace and returned carrying embers in his palms.

The World as a Shattered Labyrinth

In Neagoe’s vision, dawn is not renewal but a trembling threshold. The world is perpetually collapsing, perpetually beginning, perpetually failing to endure:

“everything collapses nothing endures”

The poems move through corridors, tunnels, citadels, forests — spaces that feel both physical and symbolic, as if the poet were wandering through the architecture of his own consciousness. The universe is a labyrinth whose walls breathe, whose floors crack, whose exits dissolve. And yet, within this ruin, there is a strange luminosity: a hawk floating over an ancient citadel, a woman burning with dawn, leaves raw with morning.

Neagoe’s landscapes are not settings; they are states of being.

Erotic Visions: Love as Cataclysm

Eroticism in Fearsome Awakenings is never gentle. It is a force that tears open the veil between worlds. Lovers are not merely bodies; they are cosmic thresholds, conduits of revelation. Desire is a storm, a fever, a metaphysical experiment.

The erotic becomes a form of prophecy:

“your fist like a rosy fruit enters my mouth”

Bodies are luminous, dangerous, trembling with the imminence of revelation. Love is both salvation and perdition — a force that protects and destroys, that blinds and illuminates. The beloved is often a panther, a serpent, a fire, a night-blooming jasmine. She is mythic, elemental, terrifying in her tenderness.

The Cannibalistic World: History’s Dark Pulse

Neagoe’s poems are haunted by history — not as chronology, but as a demonic inheritance. The world he describes is one where political evil mutates into metaphysical corruption:

“the devils who were communists and their sons pushing their fellow men to the rank of subhuman”

This is not political commentary; it is a vision of humanity devouring itself. The cannibal becomes a symbol of modernity: voracious, mocking, spiritually bankrupt. Neagoe sees the world through a lens of apocalyptic nervousness, where suffering is not an accident but a structural condition of existence.

Theological Tremors: God, Death, and the Abyss

The book is saturated with theology — but a theology of trembling, of doubt, of ecstatic terror. God appears not as comfort but as a distant, pale presence. Death is a companion, a pursuer, a whisper in the night:

“You pursue me, death you track me down under a rising arch”

Neagoe’s spiritual universe is Eastern, Orthodox, apocalyptic. It is filled with angels who exhale verdigris, devils who return from exile, and a Christ invoked in desperation. The poems feel like fragments of a lost scripture, written by someone who has glimpsed the divine and survived the encounter only barely.

Style: The Incantation of a Fevered Mind

Neagoe’s language is torrential, visionary, unrestrained. His poems do not describe — they summon. They unfold in long, breathless waves, as if dictated by a consciousness in trance. The syntax bends, stretches, breaks; images collide and fuse; metaphors erupt like volcanic ash.

This is poetry that refuses minimalism. It is maximalist, ecstatic, and utterly sincere. It speaks from the marrow, not the mind.

The Book’s Radiance

Fearsome Awakenings is a monumental work — a book that feels less written than unleashed. It is a testament to the human capacity to endure, to desire, to tremble before the abyss. Neagoe writes as if poetry were the last possible language before silence, the final attempt to articulate the unbearable truth of being alive.

It is a book of wounds, yes — but also of revelations. A book of ruins — but also of luminous, trembling dawns. A book of death — but also of the strange, persistent pulse of love.

It is, in the deepest sense, a book of awakenings.

Fearsome Awakenings — An Essay on Vlad Neagoe’s Apocalyptic Lyric Universe

Fearsome Awakenings — An Essay on Vlad Neagoe’s Apocalyptic Lyric Universe

(with citations from the attached manuscript)

Vlad Neagoe’s Fearsome Awakenings is one of those rare poetic books that does not merely present a world — it devours the reader into a vortex of metaphysical dread, historical trauma, erotic delirium, and theological vertigo. It is a work written from the edge of existence, where language itself becomes a trembling organism, and where every poem feels like a fragment of a vast, ongoing revelation.

The book is not structured around narrative or thematic progression; instead, it unfolds like a long, feverish monologue spoken by a consciousness that has seen too much — too much suffering, too much beauty, too much truth. Neagoe’s voice is prophetic, hallucinatory, and deeply human.

1. The Poetics of Trauma and Origin

The opening poem sets the tone: childhood is not innocence but crucifixion. The speaker is shaped by violence “because my mother loved me,” a refrain that becomes a metaphysical paradox.

“they hit me, they hit me, they hit me until they turned me to dust until they made me the flour of the air”

This is not confessional poetry; it is mythopoetic autobiography. The child becomes a sacrificial substance, “the flour of the air,” a material for creation and annihilation. Trauma becomes the primordial clay from which the poet’s vision is formed.

Neagoe’s childhood is not merely personal — it is emblematic of a world where cruelty is systemic, cosmic, and inherited. The poet’s body becomes a battlefield between divine paleness and human brutality.

2. The World as Labyrinth and Ruin

Throughout the book, Neagoe constructs a universe in collapse. Dawn is not renewal but terror; landscapes are desolate, mutilated, or on the verge of implosion.

“everything collapses nothing endures”

The poems move through corridors, tunnels, citadels, deserts, forests, madhouses — all rendered as metaphysical spaces where the self dissolves. The world is a labyrinth without exit, a cosmic cycle ending and beginning simultaneously.

This is not pessimism; it is a metaphysics of instability. Neagoe’s universe is alive, but its life is feverish, trembling, and perpetually threatened.

3. The Erotic as Revelation and Ruin

Eroticism in Fearsome Awakenings is not sensual but apocalyptic. Bodies are thresholds to other dimensions; lovers are portals to metaphysical knowledge.

The erotic is violent, sacred, and visionary:

“your solid woman’s body opens the entrance into the flame the island of your womb, a step of passion”

Love is both salvation and perdition. It is a force that “soothes like oblivion,” yet also “gnaws,” “shatters,” and “strikes.” Lovers are not individuals but cosmic entities whose union destabilizes reality.

Neagoe’s eroticism is reminiscent of ancient mystery cults, where the body is a site of initiation into divine terror.

4. The Cannibalistic World: History, Politics, and Evil

One of the book’s most striking dimensions is its relentless indictment of political and historical evil. Neagoe’s “cannibals” — communists, tyrants, mobs, ideologues — are not metaphors but ontological forces.

“the devils who were communists and their sons pushing their fellow men to the rank of subhuman”

The poet sees history as a grotesque theatre where humans devour one another spiritually, morally, and physically. The cannibal becomes the emblem of modernity: voracious, soulless, and endlessly multiplying.

This is not political commentary; it is metaphysical anthropology. Neagoe portrays humanity as a species trapped in cycles of violence, unable to escape its own monstrous inheritance.

5. Theological Tremors: God, Death, and the Apocalypse

The book is saturated with theology — but not doctrinal theology. Neagoe writes from the threshold where faith becomes terror, where God is both absent and overwhelmingly present.

Death is omnipresent, not as an end but as a companion, a lover, a shadow:

“You pursue me, death you track me down under a rising arch”

God doubts man; man doubts God; the Devil becomes a cultural administrator; angels freeze in bones; prayers are uttered in despair.

Neagoe’s theology is tragic, ecstatic, and deeply Eastern European — marked by Orthodox mysticism, apocalyptic dread, and a longing for transcendence that never arrives.

6. Style: The Visionary Torrent

Neagoe’s style is unmistakable:

  • long, breathless sentences,

  • visionary leaps,

  • surreal images,

  • metaphysical density,

  • prophetic tone.

His language is not descriptive but incantatory. It seeks to summon realities, not depict them. The poems feel like revelations received in states of trance.

This is poetry that refuses minimalism, irony, or detachment. It is maximalist, feverish, and utterly sincere.

7. The Book’s Achievement

Fearsome Awakenings is one of the most ambitious works of contemporary Romanian poetry — a monumental vision of human suffering, cosmic instability, erotic revelation, and metaphysical terror.

It is not a book to be read; it is a book to be endured, inhabited, survived.

Neagoe writes as if poetry were the last possible language before silence, the final attempt to articulate the unbearable truth of existence.
